The following examples describe the ways in which you can use network licenses for Vicon Nexus. For details of the following procedures, see also [Borrow a network license](https://vicon-help.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/Nexus220/pages/897712609).

## Use a license seat when connected to the server

This method of using a Vicon network license takes a seat from the network license every time you open an instance of Vicon Nexus and is automatically returned when you close it.

> ⚠️ **Important**
> ⚠️ For this method to work, you must maintain connection to the server/host machine.

1. On the machine on which you want to use Nexus, open **Vicon Product Licensing** and ensure that the server/host name is displayed at the top of the window.
2. Right-click the network license for Nexus and select **Use this License for Nexus.**

## Use a commuter license

This method of using a Vicon network license takes a seat from the network license and activates it on the client machine for a designated amount of time. You can return this license before the expiration date.

A continuous connection to the server/host machine is not required.

### Check out a commuter license

1. To check out a commuter license, the client machine must be connected to the server/host.
2. On the client machine, open **Vicon Product Licensing**, in the top part of the dialog, right-click the name of the desired software and select **Check Out.**
3. Set the number of **Desired Commuter Days** and then click **Check Out**.
4. Right-click the new commuter license and select **Use this license for Nexus**.

You can now disconnect from the server/host machine and continue to use the license.

### Check in a commuter license

When you want to return the commuter license, which can be before the expiration date, check it back in as follows:

1. On the client machine, open **Vicon Product Licensing** and in the top part of the dialog, right-click the commuter license you would like to check in and select **Check In.**
2. In the **Check In License** dialog, select **Check In.**
3. Ensure that the license is no longer displayed in the list and that the **Seats** column for the network license now show all seats as available, for example, Seats: 10/10.

## Use a remote commuter license

This method of using a network license takes a seat from the license and activates it on the client machine for a designated amount of time.

> ⚠️ **Important**
> ⚠️ You **CANNOT** return this type of license before the expiration date.

A connection to the server/host machine is not required but you (or someone else) must have access to the server/host machine's Vicon Product Licensing app.

### On the client/remote machine: Generate the remote locking code

1. On the client machine, open **Vicon Product Licensing.**
2. In Vicon Product Licensing, select **Check Out License.**
3. In the **Check Out License** dialog, select **View Remote Locking Code**.
4. In the **Current Machine Locking Code** dialog, enter the email address of a person to whom the network license server/host machine is available, and select **Send**, or to save it to a file to send later, enter or browse to the required location and filename, select **Save to File** and close the dialog.

The person with access to the license server/host machine can now check out a commuter license for use on the client/remote machine, as described in the following steps.

### On the server/host machine: Check out a remote commuter license

1. On the server/host machine, open **Vicon Product Licensing.**
2. In the **License Server** list in the top part of the dialog, right-click the desired network license.
If the selected license permits commuter licensing, the context menu displays a **Check Out** option. (Alternatively, you can select **Check Out License** at the bottom of the dialog.)
3. Select **Check Out**.
4. In the **Check Out License** dialog, specify the number of **Desired Commuter Days** for which you want to use the license remotely.
:ISO_warning: Do not overestimate the number of days for which the license will remain checked out. After a remote check out, you cannot check the license back in again until the number of days that you specified has expired.
5. Select **Remote Check Out.**
6. In the **Remote Commuter License Check Out **dialog, enter the locking code string that was emailed or load the file that was sent by the user of the client/remote machine and select **Check Out**.
7. In the** Save Commuter License** dialog, enter or browse to a path and filename for the saved commuter license, click** Save to File** and then close the dialog.
The remote commuter license is saved as a license file (*.*lic*).
8. Email the saved remote commuter license file to the user of the client machine. The user can then save and activate the checked-out remote commuter license on their machine, as described in the following steps.

### On the client/remote machine: Save and activate the remote commuter license

1. On the client/remote machine, save the file that was sent to you, as described in the preceding steps, to the Windows desktop (or any other suitable location).
2. Open **Vicon Product Licensing.**
3. At the bottom of the **Vicon Product Licensing** dialog, click **Activate License.**
4. Depending on whether you are using the file as it was received from the server/host machine user or a text string copied from the file, either:
  - In the **License Activation File** field, type or browse to the location of the license file (.*lic*) and click **Activate from File.**
or
  - Select** Advanced Options** and copy the text to the **License Activation String** field and select **Activate from String.**
5. Close the **Activate a License** dialog and check that this license is now displayed in the top section of Vicon Product Licensing and that its **Type** column is **Commuter**.
